There is a fascinating article in the EE Times on engineered enhancements to human mental and physical performance. It raises some implications about the viability of the so-called "fourth wall" that purports to separate the audience/fans from the actors/players and thereby contribute to the "willing suspension of disbelief" necessary for the drama or game to become entertaining in an immersive way, in addition to preventing disruptions of the performance due to player-fan or actor-audience altercation. What do engineered enhancements to human performance have to do with the falling of the fourth wall? One of the corollaries and also part of the foundation of the fourth wall is that the separation of fans and players is justified by the fact that games and other performances are performed according to their own set of rules and assumptions and are generally insulated from the real world. For example, the real world assumption that an individual should be able to maximize their own advantage to the fullest extent possible without breaking the laws of the land does not apply in games and performances where there are a set of in-game rules that prohibit or strongly discourage various forms of enhancements, e.g. use of steroids, human growth hormones and stimulants (sports), eBay (Star Wars Galaxies), computer assistance (chess), or lip-synching (concerts) that are not illegal to use outside of the game. When this set of in-game rules is eroded due to abandonment or non-enforcement or unenforceability, a large part of the foundation of the fourth wall crumbles. In other words, if performances, games and sports become less distinguishable from life's daily struggles due to sharing a common set of assumptions, then the fourth wall changes from the semi-permeable transparent membrane that it is today into a historical relic that can be easily stepped over. This means that arguments that free speech in MMOG's interferes with the fourth wall principle become invalid, and also that we can probably expect more incidents along the lines of the recent Artest brawl in the NBA. Although free speech in MMOG's is a productive activity in my view, the NBA brawl is obviously not in anyone's view a healthy development. However, when two worlds are united after a long separation by a barrier as in Germany, conflicts and re-adjustment problems will be inevitable and will take decades to resolve.
