Jerry Paffendorf was kind enough to quote my remarks about Sony's recent about-face in deciding to permit and even facilitate trading of in-game items in EverQuest. I had previously compared the type of closed economy in EQ to the Soviet Union in my paper in the Journal of Internet Law that appeared last July, so this is just closing the loop on another of my predictions that have materialized into reality.
BTW, according to Jerry, despite my evident prognosticative abilities, my main claim to fame is still Roomba v. Segway at the 2004 Accelerating Change conference at Stanford. However, there is a Yin-Yang thing going on here - the Segway (Yang, mobile, tall, hunter/adventurer) v. the Roomba (Yin, domestic, close to the ground, gatherer), so maybe it's more than just a classical battlebot scenario, but rather part of a broader analogy portending future events? What is the required ratio of Roombas to Segways to produce an evolutionary stable strategy?
